Born in Canton, Ohio, Katy Kempthorn discovered her passion for music at the young age of four. She began learning the piano at the age of 5--a talent that she continued to foster as she aged. She took strict lessons, but she always enjoyed adding her own flair to the classical pieces she was taught, to the consternation of her teacher. Her teacher used to tell her, “Play Beethoven like Beethoven, and someday you can play Kathryn Kempthorn like Kathryn Kempthorn.” She became inspired by that sentiment and began writing her own little tunes on the piano. Music creation was something she felt the drive to do.
She began writing her own songs and putting them on Myspace, but didn’t have an official project until the release of her EP Nightfires. She found inspiration for her atmospheric sound from other artists like Lights, Broods, Sylvan Esso, MØ, and Purity Ring. She was also inspired by finding her independence through moving to Nashville, Tennessee, and attending Belmont University. She says of Nightfires, “the core themes are about learning how to feel true freedom internally, and experience everything that comes along with love.
Most of Nightfires came from moments of being awake in the middle of the night and feeling like my brains were on fire trying to process everything I was going through in life. These late night moments would often feel like a dream in the morning, and that led to my goal of also wanting to create a dream-like sound sonically.”
Since the release of Nightfires, she continues to write music for her next project and work with licensing companies for projects they bring to her.
